Life in Oklahoma

Ah, Oklahoma. If you don't live there, there's probably a few things that pop into your head... oil, cowboys and Indians, tornadoes, Republicans, Bible beaters, that damn musical...

And while that's all true, it's a lot more than that. There's art there, good people (even though I may not agree with their politics most of the time), prairie grass that goes on for miles, cultural intersections, great BBQ...

There's a lot that I'm going to miss.

My life in Oklahoma began when I moved here with my family in 2001. It was the middle of fourth grade, and we had just left Indiana. We moved to a small town in northeastern Oklahoma, Bartlesville, and my dad worked for what used to be the largest company in the area, Phillips Petroleum. At about 30,000 people, Bartlesville wasn't something I was exactly looking forward to. I was 9 when we moved, and for me, leaving Indiana meant leaving somewhere I was bullied quite severely, and yet, I was sad to let it go because I had found some good friends. However, it was closer to my family's hometown of Springfield, Missouri, and I'm assuming the company was a better job opportunity for my dad.

Oklahoma saw me through the last years of elementary school all the way until my upcoming graduation from the University of Oklahoma in the western Oklahoman town of Norman.

Oklahoma has seen me make friends (some that have lasted from middle school until now, as I type this), lose friends, my parent's divorce, the ups and down of my relationship with my little sister (that just keeps improving and I'm very glad for it), and finally my maturation into a responsible adult, slowly becoming more independent from my parents...

Whoa.

There's a time in everyone's life when reality comes to smack you square on your face. After being accepted into the graduate program at Simmons, reality did just that. For the first time, I feel like a real adult. It's kinda scary, but mostly empowering.

Looking back on my time here in Oklahoma, I find that visuals are helpful. Here's some right now!

Me and my favorite person in the whole world, my little sister, in a shoot by my very good friend, Kelcey! Dec 2012. More of her photos here.

Me and my car. Junior year. 2007.

Well, that was like jumping in a time machine. Dang.

Here's to you Oklahoma, I'll miss you, but I'm not so sure I'll be looking back.
